On Wednesday morning, former president Donald Trump won the 2024 United States presidential election, beating Vice President Kamala Harris and securing a second term in office. Since then, students and faculty members at the Claremont Colleges have expressed mixed reactions. Trump’s win makes him one of only two chief executives in U.S. history to be elected in nonconsecutive terms. He was elected for the first time in 2016 when he beat Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton by 74 electoral votes.

In the past few days, Pomona College has suspended and banned 5C students who were allegedly involved in the Oct. 7 demonstration at Pomona College’s Carnegie Building, according to emails obtained by TSL. Four days after the demonstration, at which over 400 students called for Pomona to divest from companies and manufacturers supporting the Israeli government, President G. Gabrielle Starr addressed the situation in an email to the Pomona community.

At 10:07 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, over 400 5C students participated in a demonstration for Pomona College to divest from companies and manufacturers supporting the Israeli government. A group of protestors eventually moved to occupy Carnegie Hall, resulting in the building being closed and suffering extensive damage and vandalism. The day of the walkout marked the one-year anniversary of Hamas’ targeted attack in Southern Israel, where 1,200 Israeli people were killed and 251 were taken hostage.
