The first season of Severance was many things, but horny it was not. Apart from Helly giving Mark a quick kiss for luck before the Overtime Contingency, and Irving chastely pressing his forehead against Burt’s, sexuality largely took a back seat to the show’s puzzle-box obsession with the inner workings of Lumon. Who has time for knocking boots when there’s a mysterious room full of goats to investigate? But the second season of the Apple TV+ drama has gone all in on skin.

The amazing and terrible thing about Severance is that it makes innies of us all. Presumably, unless this is some kind of Lost scenario in which the creators are making it up as they go along, creator Dan Erickson and executive producer Ben Stiller know exactly where this show is headed — but we don’t. Apart from fleeting glimpses at life above ground, we are largely trapped in Lumon’s brightly lit basement floors right alongside our heroes, wondering what the hell is happening.

Every year when I write about the state of queer books for Them, I find myself trying to sell you on the concept of reading itself. Books! Remember those things?

Television had a lot to offer in 2024, but because many of my favorite TV shows were on break this past year, I’ve largely been in a state of suspended animation, waiting for my beloved Yellowjackets and White Lotus shot-chaser combo to return.

Everyone needs a hobby, but perhaps especially gay people. Social media is dying, we are statistically more likely to have fewer (or no) children, and the monoculture as we know it no longer exists. In other words, this is a great time to find your niche and get lost in it. Make 2025 the year you become a “pickle guy.” Aspire to become the kind of queer whose special interest is the first thing people mention in conjunction with you at a party: “Oh, Aiden? They’re really into skateboard painting.

The best movies of 2024 would still have stood out at any other time. But amid this year’s sparse release calendar, they were manna from heaven. It took until the release of Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers in April for me to feel truly fed at the movies, and then I had to keep nibbling on that phallic churro for weeks to tide me over until the next anticipated title.

In an alternate timeline where the studios had more swiftly met the demands of the writer’s strike — and where Hollywood itself wasn’t in the middle of a worrying contraction — this year could have had a much wider array of television offerings. But alas, 2024 was a little sparser than the peak TV of recent memory, not to mention the fact that many of our favorite LGBTQ+ programs have either been unceremoniously cancelled or were on a break year.

Foliage and pumpkin spice are nice and all, but the real reason I’m ready for the turning of the seasons is the fall 2024 release calendar. Beach reads are fun, but the books you really want to sink your teeth into tend to come out after summer ends. I love reality TV as much as the next couch potato, but autumn is when networks release the kind of shows you make a point to watch.
