VANCOUVER—Scientists have been warning against the catastrophic impact of burning fossil fuel for decades now. Summers are becoming more intense every passing year and, like much of the world, Canada is witnessing uncontrollable wildfires every season. This was in plain sight for the world to see in August, when the town of Jasper, Alberta quite literally burned to the ground. One third of the town’s infrastructure was impacted, including the sewage plant and hospital.

The Vancouver School Board, or school district no.39, is the board responsible for publicly funded education until grade 12 in the city. In total the district has over 100 schools and an enrollment of almost 50,000 students. Many of these are named after notable historical figures, including freedom fighters, such as the Prince of Wales secondary school. There is another school named after famed teetotaler and benevolent racist Winston Churchill.

We have formed a circle, sitting around our bright orange bonfire. Our circle is not perfect, but is anything in life?
