GPs will get £102million to enlarge their surgeries under plans to boost appointments. The NHS cash will go to more than 1,000 practices in England — around one in six of the 6,200 total. Ministers said many doctors have the time to see more patients but not the physical space. Satisfaction with the NHS tumbled to an all-time low this year with 77 per cent disappointed by GP wait times. The Royal College of GPs also found 40 per cent of family doctors say their practice is not fit for purpose.

JUNIOR doctors are set to go on strike again — despite a 22 per cent pay rise last year. Union chiefs will ballot thousands of their members later this month. A fresh round of walkouts could cripple NHS hospitals as soon as July and last until 2026. Yesterday the British Medical Association said that Health Secretary Wes Streeting refused to meet demands for another pay rise, triggering a strike ballot.

BRITISH women need to start having twice as many babies to save the human race, experts say. Boffins claim the minimum to avoid extinction is 2.7 babies per woman worldwide. Britain’s average is 1.44. The global figure is an estimated 2.3.Diane Cuaresma, author of the Japanese study, said the adjusted figure is higher than the long-held rate of 2.1 to account for early deaths and childless women.
