Communities could be "cut off", the Met Office has warned, with the heatwave possibly due to come to a dramatic end. A yellow thunderstorm warning has been issued, which will be valid from Saturday, June 21 at 3pm until 4am on Sunday, June 22. An amber heat health alert remains in place with the UK Health Security Agency warning the heat is likely to result in an increase in deaths.

Dramatic weather maps have pinpointed the moment when severe thunderstorms are set to bring an abrupt halt to the current scorching heatwave. The splendid sunshine is forecast to persist for a while longer, with Saturday expected to be the hottest day of the year thus far, as temperatures may soar above 38C in some eastern regions. Although there will be a slight dip in temperatures afterwards, they will remain high enough to sustain the heatwave criteria for several days more.
