The 21-year-old Curve Lake First Nation member had been selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the sixth round of the 2024 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

For the third time in as many years, Lajeunesse, a member of Dokis First Nation, will find himself playing professional hockey in a different European country. Lajeunesse, a 28-year-old forward, has signed on to play the 2025-26 season with HC Tiroler Wasserkraft Innsbruck, a squad based in Austria. The 13-squad Austrian league is considered a step up from Denmark’s pro circuit.

NoiseCat, a member of Canim Lake Band in British Columbia, made history earlier this year when he was the first Indigenous to North America filmmaker to be nominated for an Academy Award.

A bit of history was made in the Inuit hamlet of Sanikiluaq on June 11. It was announced that the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) has reached financial close on its first investment in Nunavut. The $6.7 million loan will result in a life-changing clean energy project in Sanikiluaq. The initiative, which is called the Anuriqjuak Nukkiksautiit Project (ANP), will feature a one-megawatt wind turbine and a one megawatt-hour energy storage system.
