CÁDIZ officials say their town will not be overrun with cruise ship tourists this summer season as more than 11,000 passengers disembark onto the historical port’s streets on Thursday. The 10,654 passengers, mostly from the US, Canada and the UK, touring Cádiz arrived on three different cruise ships. May 8 was one of the busiest days for the Port this May, with the three ships docked simultaneously.

DURING a mission to the simulated Martian base in the United States, the all-female crew from Spain demonstrated menstrual blood could be used as a fertilizer for growing food and green shoots on Mars. The seven Spanish scientists, part of the Hypatia II mission, spent almost two weeks in the Utah desert at the space research station from February 2 to 14.

RELATIVES of ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad have denied stealing and laundering €700 million through corporate networks in Spain and Gibraltar, as the trial against the eight defendants opened on Monday. Rifaat al-Assad, Bashar’s 87-year-old uncle and former vice president, was also meant to stand trial as the alleged head of a corporate company created in Gibraltar for money laundering. The ‘Butcher of Hama’ withdrew from trial however, due to health reasons.

Day one was brutal, Callum says. “We basically cycled the entirety of the Queen Charlotte track, then added an extra 30km to the end of the day, biking to the family home past Blenheim.”The trio eventually made it to Christchurch a few days later, and then Callum found himself alone. MORE THAN 1900 cruise ship passengers spent the first day of May exploring Cádiz, amid growing concerns of over tourism in the bustling port city. The southern Spanish city has become a major cruise hub, with more than 300 calls last year, bringing in almost 700,000 passengers, a 2% increase in traffic compared to 2023. It’s predicted this summer season will see even more tourists spilling out into the city’s streets.
