Feeding the need: Summer meal programs help low-income students get enough to eat when school is out

Staff members at Baker City’s Brooklyn Primary School wheeled out a cart loaded with prepared meals on a warm Thursday morning in June. Students and family members lined up outside the school to pick up the free meals, which were provided by the Summer Food Service Program, or SFSP. Among them was Tasha Duncan, a mother of four who recently moved to the area from California. “They didn’t do anything like this back home,” Duncan said.

After hitting a peak during the pandemic, the federal nutrition assistance program has seen increasing participation across the state over the last few years. The program served 116,334 participants in Oregon in 2020. The following year the number dipped to 110,890, and in 2022 it rose only slightly, to 110,967.
