The board of trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has kicked against the announcement of Samuel Anyanwu as national secretary of the party. In a statement issued on Thursday, Adolphus Wabara, chairman of the BoT, also opposed postponing the national executive council (NEC) meeting scheduled for June 30. President Bola Tinubu has declined assent to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Amendment Bill, 2025. Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the house of representatives, read the letter containing Tinubu’s decision on the bill during Thursday’s plenary. Tinubu noted that the bill seeks to empower the NDLEA to retain a portion of proceeds from drug-related crimes, noting that it is against extant financial regulations.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on a state visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. During the visit, Shettima will participate in the official launch of Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Programme, a flagship environmental initiative aimed at combating deforestation, enhancing biodiversity, and mitigating the adverse effects of climate change. The programme targets the planting of 20 billion tree seedlings over a four-year period.

Chimaobi Atu, a member of the house of representatives, has defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Atu’s defection notice was announced on the floor of the green chamber during Thursday’s plenary, by Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the house. The lawmaker represents Enugu north/south federal constituency. The legislator cited the protracted wrangling within the opposition party, saying it has negatively affected his duties.

Dickson Tarkighir, a member of the house of representatives, says agriculture in Benue has been adversely affected by the incessant attacks on farmers. Speaking with journalists on Wednesday after moving a motion on the floor of the green chamber, Tarkighir, who represents Makurdi/Guma federal constituency, said the state no longer lives up to its sobriquet of  “food basket of the nation”, as widespread insecurity has turned it into an “empty basket”.
