But the GOP has a long way to go before it can be truly competitive statewide, experts said, and Democrats aren’t sweating it. “The California GOP is irrelevant statewide,” Rep. Republican and Democratic senators found some common ground on Wednesday: Members from both parties think Mark Zuckerberg might be hiding something about Meta’s ties to China. During a hearing featuring a former Facebook employee, Sen. Josh Hawley accused the company’s CEO and other leaders of possibly lying under oath in statements to Congress about the nature of their dealings with the Chinese Communist Party. As U.S. consumers face 125% tariffs on all Chinese imports, China hawks in Washington worry that President Donald Trump’s fixation on trade imbalance distracts from solving what they consider to be one of the biggest threats to national security: the Chinese government’s ties to TikTok. “The big problem with the president is spending way too much time tariffing the rest of the world instead of dealing with an issue that is front and center,” Rep. Time is running out for the White House to announce a deal on TikTok, which must be sold or banned in the U.S. by Saturday. Even if President Donald Trump’s next step flouts the law, Senate Republicans are unlikely to do much to oppose the administration. That’s not to say they don’t want someone to enforce the law requiring TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell or face a ban. “We passed the law. I mean, we don’t have any enforcement power of our own.

Republican lawmakers have something in common with TikTok fans: They have no idea what will happen when time is up on the 75-day deadline extension President Donald Trump gave for the platform’s owner to sell the app or face a ban. The period designated to broker a deal ends Saturday. ByteDance, TikTok’s China-based owner, hasn’t sold. And the White House has yet to brief Republicans on Capitol Hill about what comes next, according to a dozen lawmakers NOTUS spoke to on Monday evening.

As Democrats soul-search for a new message to meet the current Trump era, many lawmakers are pointing to the ideas at the center of “Abundance,” the much-hyped book by Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson, as at least a partial solution to the party’s woes. “This is one of the most important books Democrats can read — wake up!” California Gov. Gavin Newsom said on his podcast during an episode with Klein. Newsom said he sent copies of the book to Democratic leadership in the California Legislature.
