1 INTRODUCTION Soils are integral in our fight against the climate crisis, as they store nearly 3000 Pg carbon (C) globally, and these C stocks may be further enhanced through changes in management practices (Sokol et al., 2022). The majority—up to 65%—of SOC is in the mineral-associated organic C (MAOC) pool (Sokol et al., 2022), which is more resistant to microbial decomposition than the particulate organic C (POC) pool (Six et al., 2002).
