    I happened to watch the recordings of one of the recent book clubs organized by the Nursing Now programme, and the discussion on one of the chapters titled Gender in Nursing fascinated me greatly. I decided to write this blog on the key takeaways from that discussion. With celebrations of International Women’s Day on 8 March, to reading all the amazing stories of women around the world, it is no surprise that nurses and midwives are also largely impacted by the gender inequalities in healthcare.

    I am a trained nurse from overseas and now a final-year midwifery student at the University of Birmingham. Training as a student midwife has been both rewarding and exhausting. Most days, I work in a unit that is short-staffed and overstretched, where midwives are doing their best to manage heavy workloads while trying to support students like me.

    Coming from a nursing background, I have been a registered nurse for the past four years and am currently pursuing MSc in midwifery from University of Birmingham. My career took a transformative turn in 2020 when I became involved with the Nursing Now Challenge. Initially joining as a member, I grew into the role of regional lead for the Eastern Mediterranean and now serve as the co-chair and a board member of the programme.
