1. IntroductionThe aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is a biological sensor that alters gene expression in response to many environmental pollutants (such as dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyl compounds) and flavonoids [1,2]. Many tryptophan metabolites (such as 6-formylindolo (3,2-b) carbazole (FICZ)) have been shown to be the endogenous ligands of this receptor. These metabolites can be generated in the gut microbiome and subsequently activate AHR in human cells [3].
