    Excessive drinking was linked to a jump in high blood pressure deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In the report, out Friday, researchers found the estimated average number of hypertension deaths from excessive alcohol usewas 51.6% higher in 2020 through 2021 than in 2016 through 2017. This increase amounted to about 21,137 deaths annually, compared to 13,941 for the respective time frames.

    A children's cough syrup from brand Little Remedies is being recalled due to microbial contamination, according to federal health officials. In an alert from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Wednesday, Medtech Products Inc., the brands' manufacturer, voluntarily issued the recall due to the presence of Bacillus cereus, which can cause two types of food-borne illnesses, and loss of shelf-stability.

    A part of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline dedicated to LGBTQ+ youth — known as 988 option 3 — is being terminated under the Trump administration, the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration announced. "On July 17, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline will no longer silo LGB+ youth services, also known as the 'Press 3 option,' to focus on serving all help seekers, including those previously served through the Press 3 option," a statement Tuesday from SAMHSA read.

    The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the drug lenacapavir as a twice-yearly injection to prevent HIV. The drug, called Yeztugo from company Gilead Sciences, was approved Wednesday based on data from clinical trials that showed 99.9% of participants who received it remained HIV negative.

    More older adults in the United States are dying from unintentional falls, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics data brief out Wednesday, researchers found the death rate for falls in adults 65 and older increased with increasing age for both men and women. From 2003 to 2023, the rate increased more than 70% for adults ages 65 to 74, and more than 75% for those aged 75 to 84.
