As I write my final op-ed for The Emory Wheel after four years on the Editorial Board, it is with a heavy heart that I address the appalling mismanagement and moral failures that have unfolded on our campus, starting on April 25. Our community’s current atmosphere of fear and repression is profoundly distressing.

Burst the BubbleCollege is both transitory and transcendetal; everyone at Emory is interconnected because we are all students at this institution – and that’s where the similarities end. Dichotomies persist in our individual experiences: Oxford and the Atlanta campus, being a white student or a student of color, living on campus off, staying in Decatur for all four years or making Atlanta a larger part of your time here.

When I reunited with my sister this winter break, the first thing she pointed out, after a warm meeting at the airport, was that my accent in English had changed. I’ve always had an accent, with Spanish being my first language, but this time around, she couldn’t recognize my tone. “Have you forgotten you are Latina?” she asked. When my sister noticed I was pronouncing my T’s differently, I knew my friend Vedika was inadvertently to blame.

A week ago, I asked ChatGPT for a list of Latinx Georgia state legislators. It responded that, as of 2021, no Latinxs officials were elected in the state. This claim is incorrect. When I re-confronted the AI phenomena, it later listed State Representative Pedro “Pete” Marin and Rep. Marvin Lim as the only two Latinx Georgia legislators. This time, only the latter was incorrect.
