The city has a policy limiting the display of so-called cultural flags to one day per calendar year. The Worcester Black Heritage Committee had wanted the flag to remain flying through the weekend. The group said its decision to move the flag-raising was a way of pushing back against the city policy. Thursday, June 19, marks Juneteenth. The holiday commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States in 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been signed two years prior. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 after President Joe Biden signed a bill passed by Congress to mark Juneteenth, or June 19, as such. There are several local events starting on the 19th, through the weekend of the Sunday June 22nd.

It may be the best gift Matthew Tracy has ever received: a $1 million winning lottery ticket. The Worcester man chose the cash option for his winnings from the Massachusetts State Lottery's "$10,000,000 Bonanza" instant ticket game. The cash option is a one-time payment of $650,000 (before taxes). Tracy said the win still doesn't feel real, and that he has no plans for the money as of yet. The ticket was bought for Tracy by a friend at Wachusett Farms, located on Worcester Street in West Boylston.
