The Department of Conservation (DoC) has long-running regional goat control programmes across the country, covering about a million hectares of conservation land. The aim is to prevent the spread of wild goats into new areas, remove wild goats from areas with high biodiversity values, and keep numbers low enough in other areas to ensure forest health is not compromised, DoC says.

A charity group visiting Northland to help communities grow food and to help gift to the community an upcoming harvest of about 15 tonnes of locally grown vegetables is devastated to have lost all its tools to thieves. Whenua Warrior charitable trust founder Kelly Francis said the group of travelling volunteer gardeners, normally based in South Auckland, had built 1500 gardens from Kaitāia to Christchurch since it started in 2017. This was the first time it had been burgled.

A pod of pilot whales rescued after stranding on Ruakākā Beach yesterday, have stayed safely out at sea overnight but officials are keeping watch in case the group beaches again. The pod of up to 40 whales came ashore about 5.30pm. Most were successfully refloated and headed back out to sea, apart from four - a calf and three young adults - that died on the shore or in the shallows.

Sunny, warm weather is the outlook for the Gisborne-East Coast region the next five days, with the possibility of 30-degree days. Clear skies and sun are forecast through to the beginning of next week, and temperatures are predicted to be in the high twenties. Those still on holiday should make the most of it, as the weather turns wet next Monday, and the rest of the week is a mixed bag. Water temperature off the beaches is around 19 degrees, which is average for the time of year.
