The Sullivan’s Island Bird Banding Station had a productive fall migration season, banding 665 birds from 46 different species and recapturing 47 birds previously banded at the station.
As the station transitions to its winter banding season next week, highlights from the fall season included a Philadelphia vireo, two tree swallows, and 14 painted buntings. A wide variety of warblers, flycatchers, and thrushes were also banded.

We had a busy September at the Sullivan’s Island Bird Banding Station (SIBBS)! We have banded more than 150 birds from 20 different species. Frequent flyers this week include the white-eyed vireo, red-eyed vireo, yellow warbler, and American redstart.
We heard a summer tanager making its “pitick” call from the bushes, and, not long after, the tanager flew into one of our mist nets! The summer tanager in the photo is a young male.

Fall migration is in full swing at the Sullivan’s Island Bird Banding Station! We have been capturing a variety of warblers, vireos, and thrushes that are stopping over in the maritime forest to rest and refuel on their migration journeys. This veery was one of 15 migratory songbird species we banded this week! Species diversity is very high this time of year, especially in September and October.
Veeries are thrushes that breed in Canada, the northern U.S., and Appalachia.

It has been a busy fall season at the Sullivan’s Island Bird Banding Station. We have been banding a wide variety of passage migrants on their way to the tropics, including over a dozen warbler species, vireos and thrushes. We have even banded some migrants that are rare in our area, including a Philadelphia Vireo – a new species for our station – and a gray-cheeked thrush.
Meanwhile, the winter residents are steadily streaming in.

The Sullivan’s Island Bird Banding Station had a busy spring season. Between February and May, we banded 345 birds from 21 species.
The most common species were myrtle warblers – also known as yellow-rumped warblers or butter butts – and gray catbirds. Myrtle warblers overwinter in the Lowcountry and are abundant from October until April. They are easily identifiable by their distinct yellow rump patches. We are learning more about the gray catbirds on Sullivan’s Island.

Winter 2023 has been quite a busy season so far at the Sullivan’s Island Bird Banding Station.
We have been banding about 20 to 30 birds per morning, and the vast majority of these birds have been yellow-rumped warblers. This species overwinters in our area and feeds largely on wax myrtle berries. In fact, the subspecies of yellow-rumped warbler found in the Eastern United States is known as the myrtle warbler.
In February, we banded almost 150 myrtle warblers and recaptured about 25.
