    Each year, World Teachers’ Day falls around the beginning of the school year or the start of a new semester for many countries. It’s a busy time for teachers, whether they’re connecting with their new students or ramping up on classwork preparations. And this year’s theme — “Valuing teachers’ voices: towards a new social contract for education” — reminds us of the passion teachers bring to their profession daily, doing everything it takes to positively impact their students’ lives.

    When the BCCDC presents on the public health impacts of wildfire smoke, we often ask audiences to consider the following question: If there are 10 asthma-related physician visits on a slightly smoky day, how many occur on a day with 10 times as much smoke? Based on epidemiologic evidence, the answer is about 20 [Figure]. Based on human intuition, however, the most common response is 100. This is true even among professionals who are trained in environmental public health.

    I was saying that the government must remain accountable for the expenditure of taxpayers’ money and that, if this ARC Board goes on a frolic of its own and starts irresponsibly approving improper expenditure, which is most improper in itself, the taxpayer will suffer. I make the point in relation to this irresponsible proposal to remove ministerial discretion on ARC grant programs that ministerial discretion exists for most programs across government.

    Monash University should be investing every last cent educating its students in the interests of our nation, not throwing lavish parties for the top end of town at taxpayer expense. In a cost-of-living crisis, Labor’s Education Minister, Jason Clare, must explain how the former vice-chancellor of Monash and now Victorian governor, Margaret Gardner, could spend an astonishing $127,134 on her farewell dinner at the National Gallery of Victoria last July.
