ASHEVILLE - The city's and Buncombe County's public pools opened for summer over the Memorial Day weekend. Of the city's three pools, only one will be open for the season. Where can you swim this Memorial Day? Here are Asheville and Buncombe pool openings. While the Dr. Wesley Grant Sr. Southside Community Center pool opened May 24, along with the county's five outdoor pools, the Malvern Hills Park pool remains shuttered following last year's closure.

ASHEVILLE - As it grapples with ongoing staffing shortages, the city's bus service will temporarily reduce or cancel four of its routes, according to a news release. Asheville Rides Transit will adjust operations beginning May 27. Changes will remain in place until staffing levels allow for the restoration of service. The downtown Transit Center, at 49 Coxe Ave., will remain open during normal operating hours and staff will be there to assist riders.

ASHEVILLE - A real estate cooperative in West Asheville's Emma community, formed to resist displacement and gentrification, officially named its new park for James Vester Miller, a prominent Black builder responsible for some of Asheville's most iconic 19th- and early 20th-century brick buildings. La Esparanza Real Estate Cooperative and representatives from the city's legacy neighborhoods celebrated the park May 24, unveiling a community historical marker honoring Miller's accomplishments.

ASHEVILLE - The city announced the partial reopening of several riverfront parks and greenways along the French Broad on May 22, though some of the hardest hit areas remain fully closed. In a news statement, the city urged people to be cautious and "mindful" while visiting reopened areas and to adhere to posted signage, barriers and instructions from park staff regarding closed areas or possible hazards.
