In those spaces, incentives are increasingly in favor of those who yell louder rather than those who work together to get things done. Unfortunately, we’re seeing that dynamic play out in the environmental space, where a particular subset of activists is working to denigrate and undermine climate progress in the private sector rather than supporting actual climate action.

Peru has been in political turmoil since December when former president Pedro Castillo was democratically deposed and arrested after he attempted to undemocratically dissolve the Peruvian Congress in an authoritarian power grab. A power grab the likes of which had not been seen in Peru for about 30 years. The mining sector composes of Peru’s GDP. Furthermore, minerals comprise of Peru’s total exports. Unsurprising given that Peru is the world’s second-largest copper producer.

In recent years, a number of financial firms have taken what some consider a sharp turn to the left, marrying so-called environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria to traditional investment strategies. Many saw supporting an energy transition towards renewables as a slam dunk both for short-term and long-term returns. That honeymoon, however, ended abruptly last year when global disruptions battered many of the resulting funds. This left investors and retirees feeling deceived.
