AbstractHeterozygous variants in the gene encoding the SOX10 transcription factor cause congenital syndromes affecting pigmentation, digestion, hearing, and neural function. Most of these symptoms are attributable to failed differentiation and loss of neural crest cells. Extensive research on mouse and zebrafish models has confirmed that Sox10 is essential for most non-skeletal crest derivatives, but seemingly dispensable for skeletal development.

Acinetobacter baumanniiAcinetobacter baumannii is a difficult-to-treat healthcare-associated pathogen due to its propensity for environmental contamination and multidrug resistance. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s 2019 Antibiotic Resistance Threats report listed carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii (CRAB) as an urgent threat to public health. CDC data suggest that CRAB resulted in over 8500 infections, 700 deaths, and $281 million in excess healthcare costs in 2017 [1].

INTRODUCTIONAntimicrobial resistance has become a leading cause of death globally and is estimated to result in about 3,500 deaths per day (1). In addition, resistant Gram-negative infections are associated with higher hospital costs, length of hospital and ICU stay, and increased mortality (2). Of these, infections caused by Acinetobacter spp. remain one of the most important unmet medical needs (3).
