On maps of Australia, the great inland salt lakes are often shaded in blue. The colour suggests the presence of water, which can be misleading, especially for the biggest of those lakes.

About a year ago, Matthew Perovic had to find a housemate to share the cost of his rental in Adelaide's inner-southern suburbs. He has lived in the property for about nine years, and for the first seven there was only one rental increase of $20 a week. "Then it went up $100 week," Mr Perovic said. Other than partners, it was the first time he had to have a housemate in at least 15 years. Despite having a higher salary now, he is worried about the cost of living.

Anthony Albanese has confirmed that if he is re-elected, his party will formally bid for South Australia to host a future International Climate Change Conference in partnership with Pacific nations. The prime minister says the conference would produce revenue and showcase SA's renewable energy sector. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has previously said he will scrap the plans if he is elected in May.

Mathew Hawkins has been sentenced to more than six years in prison for the manslaughter of Luke Sweetman outside a hotel in Adelaide's north-west. Hawkins previously pleaded guilty to the charge after punching his victim outside the Peninsula Hotel in Taperoo. Mr Sweetman's family has called on the federal government to increase security at Australian hotels and pubs.
