Surfer and shark attack victim Lance Appleby has been commemorated at a memorial service in Streaky Bay. Family and friends paid tribute to the 28-year-old who had a "zest for life". Mr Appleby was surfing at Granites Beach on January 2, when witnesses reported seeing him being attacked by a shark. Vineyards in south-eastern parts of the country were heavily hit by devastating frosts in September, prompting fears of a ruined vintage. While production will definitely be down, growers have been buoyed by the sight of buds on their vines. One Riverland grower says there will be a long-term impact on local economies, and the state government is hoping to use satellite imagery to see the extent of the damage and help growers prepare for future events.

Australian Taxation Office (ATO) whistleblower Richard Boyle has told a South Australian court he plans to testify in his own defence when he stands trial next year. Mr Boyle, a former ATO debt collection officer, first became an internal whistleblower in October 2017, when he grew concerned about operations in the tax office.

GFG Alliance's executive chairman says he remains confident that the Whyalla steelworks' troubled blast furnace will be fully operational "very shortly", after having travelled to the plant this week. Sanjeev Gupta, who sat down for a one-on-one interview, told the ABC that a plan was in place to fix the coal-fired furnace, which has been offline for almost six months this year.
