KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Every day, more than 26,000 vehicles travel through the Pigeon River Gorge, a winding, mountainous 28-mile stretch of Interstate 40 that cuts through the Great Smoky Mountains. But what was built to carry cars through the mountains has created a deadly divide for wildlife and people alike. Jeff Hunter is the Southern Appalachian director for the National Parks Conservation Association. He said the organization recorded 103 bear deaths along the highway.

DANDRIDGE, Tenn. — After sitting empty for decades, a 1927 Dandridge school building has been transformed into affordable housing for seniors. The $12 million renovation project, known as the Dandridge School Lofts, converted the long-vacant school into 38 one-bedroom apartments for residents 55 years old and older, many of whom are on fixed incomes.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Knoxville City Council decided to postpone a proposal that would have increased the scope and cost of a contract with a California-based institute that works to reduce gun violence. According to a release, the National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform has worked with Knoxville since June 2023 to implement a Gun Violence Reduction Strategy.

At a memorial Mass in Knoxville, Tennessee, Bishop Mark Beckman said the faithful are united in grief and in prayer. "The people who gather tonight do so because they love Pope Francis, and they want to pray for him and remember the gift that he has been to the church," Beckman said.
