    Criticism does not amount to discrimination or abuse Because it’s 2024 and many of us seem to have gone mad, I will have to start by stating the obvious. “Discrimination” is a word with no immediate negative or positive connotations. Whether it heralds something good or bad is determined by the intentions behind the word and the consequences that flow from those intentions.

    For my sins—in 1991—I spent a year on the University of Queensland Student Union Council. Yes, I was elected, which means I was a volunteer. It ranks up there among the more pointless activities I’ve undertaken. I was 19, that’s my excuse. Because I’m conscientious, I took it seriously. I turned up to the monthly meetings. I researched the motions to be debated and voted on in advance. I tried to say not-stupid-things when I thought it was worth making a comment.

    Checking my emails on Tuesday 18th June I found (yet another) from my regulator to say that a complaint against me had been dismissed. This is a regular occurrence, complaints of my racism, anti semitism, transphobia and homophobia have been landing with reassuring predictability in my inbox for the last six years. Most are comical in their poorly constructed outrage. I reject them all. Sarah’s Newsletter is a reader-supported publication.
