The Mendocino College Foundation and Redwood Valley-Calpella Fire Department Volunteers signed an agreement to offer a $1,000 scholarship to a student pursuing a first responder career, the college said last week. The inspiration for the scholarship program was the Mendocino College students, Fire Lt. Megan Turner Brown said. ย Last year, Brown served as a guest proctor for students enrolled in Ukiah High Schoolโs first responder Career Technical Education program.

MENDOCINO CO., 5/28/25 โ The first heat wave of the year will arrive in Mendocino County on Friday, triggering the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory. ย According to the weather service, temperatures as high as 105 degrees are expected in parts of the county on Friday. ย Laytonville, Leggett, Potter Valley, Redwood Valley and Willits can expect highs in the mid-90s. ย Calpella, Ukiah, Covelo and Hopland will hit the 100s.

Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens Executive Director Molly Barker will retire in the fall after eight years at the helm, the gardens said last week. Founded in 1961 by Ernest and Betty Schoefer, the gardens offer 47 acres of native and decorative plantings, as well as coastal gardens and prairies. The garden is famed for its collection of rhododendrons, which attract enthusiasts from around the world and includes a collection of hybridizations created in Fort Bragg.
