Court documents filed Thursday in the federal court case of Doğukan Günaydın show that on Monday, immigration Judge Sarah Mazzie granted him a $5,000 bond. In her order, Judge Mazzie said Günaydın does not pose a public safety risk, nor is he likely to flee.

    A removal hearing for a University of Minnesota graduate student currently held in detention by ICE has been pushed back by three weeks.  During a brief hearing held Tuesday in the removal proceeding for Doğukan Günaydın, an attorney for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) asked for more time to prepare its case. Günaydın, who is a Turkish citizen, has been detained in the Sherburne County Jail for nearly three weeks.

    A University of Minnesota graduate student from Turkey who’s been jailed for two weeks is expected to make a bid for his freedom at the Fort Snelling Immigration Court on Friday. The Department of Homeland Security is seeking to deport Doğukan Günaydın because of a drunk driving conviction. Günaydın, 28, pleaded guilty to gross misdemeanor DWI last year following a June 2023 incident in Minneapolis. Günaydın will appear for a bond hearing, where he’s expected to testify.

    The Trump administration says a University of Minnesota graduate student from Turkey should remain jailed while the Department of Homeland Security moves forward with removal proceedings. That's according to court documents filed just ahead of a deadline late Friday. Doğukan Günaydin sued the federal government after Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested him outside his St. Paul home on March 27, and he’s been detained in the Sherburne County Jail since then.
