As Harvard continues its search for a new president, following the January resignation of former president Claudine Gay, the university announced Friday that Harvard Law Dean John Manning has been appointed to serve as the university’s interim provost. Manning, who has served as dean of the law school since 2017, will “begin a leave” from his deanship on March 14, according to a letter written by interim president Alan Garber announcing the appointment to the Harvard community.

Brian Mulroney, the former Canadian prime minister and a senior partner at Norton Rose Fulbright Canada, died on Thursday at 84. Mulroney was remembered by Norton Rose as “a statesman, a visionary, and a humanitarian.” He started his legal career as a labor lawyer at Norton Rose Canada predecessor Howard Cate, Ogilvy, one of Canada’s oldest firms and Montreal’s largest.

Last year, 30 Chinese law firms announced they would be setting up a total of 40 new offices in mainland China, according to an analysis of data conducted by Law.com International. Of those 30, fewer than a handful are considered to rate among the country’s elite law firms, which have focused on securing and solidifying international market share, rather than expanding in the domestic Chinese market.
