After a turbulent few days, a York business that’s been at the centre of an animal welfare controversy has closed temporarily. The Owl Adventures Education Centre opened on Goodramgate earlier this month, offering customers the chance to hold birds of prey. Concerns over the welfare of the birds were shared online, with some people calling the business cruel and asking for City of York Council and the RSPCA to investigate.

The incident took place just before 9pm yesterday in Birkin, and fire crews from Selby and Pontefract responded to the scene. Fire fighters released 4 occupants from the vehicle, which had ended up on its side. Crews ensured the scene was safe and handed the incident over to the police.

The blaze was caused by a disposable BBQ that had been left unattended. The report came in at 11:24 pm and the fire was in the Southbank area of the city. Firefighters extinguished the flames and dampened down the area.

Police want to speak to this man following the theft of a bike in York. A green Carrera Vengence bicycle was taken from Majorie Waite Court, in Clifton. The incident took place on 20 February. A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Please contact us if you recognise the man pictured on CCTV, as he may have information that will assist our investigation.”If you can help, call North Yorkshire Police on 101 and pass information for incident number 12250031175.

A protest is planned at a new York shop which has become the focal point of online concerns about perceived animal welfare issues. Owl Adventures has long hosted bird of prey displays in Museum Gardens. It recently opened its first brick and mortar site on Goodramgate – the Owl Adventures Education Centre. Its owners insist they have the welfare of the birds at heart. But many online have expressed concerns, leading to a petition urging an investigation, and now a planned protest.
