As I begin to mourn everything I’m about to leave behind at USC, I know by far the greatest loss will be saying goodbye to the people at the Daily Trojan. My parents raised me on public radio. On the weekends, my dad had “Car Talk” and “Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!” blaring from the stereo in our garage. On the weekdays, my brother and I strapped into our booster seats and listened to “Morning Edition” and “Fresh Air” from the back of our mom’s Toyota Sienna. At the time, I didn’t realize it, but now as I look back on my childhood it’s difficult for me to recall a moment when there wasn’t National Public Radio playing in the background.

For the past seven years, student journalism has been at the center of my life. I’m 21 years old, about to enter my senior year of college, and I still can’t decide whether or not that’s a good thing. When I started writing in high school, every interview and every headline felt exhilarating, but by the time I came to USC, I was terrified that I’d spend another four years sitting in a newsroom. I’ve never wanted to be a professional journalist — I still don’t.
