Students travelling for spring break should monitor any illnesses that arise, Chief Campus Health Officer Dr. Sarah Van Orman said Tuesday in a briefing with campus media. Van Orman said while the human body can handle many illnesses without medical intervention, rash, fever and bloody diarrhea indicate that an illness might require professional evaluation and treatment. Van Orman also reminded students to take precautions to minimize the risk of contracting viruses or diseases while traveling.

While influenza cases continue to decline at USC, Chief Campus Health Officer Dr. Sarah Van Orman said the weeks directly after spring break historically bring a spike of respiratory and flu viruses to campus. The USC Helenes set up tables inside Taper Hall and Salvatori Hall to distribute free N95 masks to students from 9 a.m. to noon Monday and Tuesday. The Air Quality Index at University Park Campus has been as high as “unhealthy” in the last week due to multiple active wildfires in Los Angeles, according to the University’s Environmental Health & Safety website. In a University-wide email, USC provided an N95 request form.

The Nucleus, a student-run newspaper dedicated to providing easy-to-read scientific articles, released its third volume on Nov. 8. This volume was the first to feature a full cohort of writers, editors and designers, and covers topics from technology to ecology. The Nucleus released 16 articles in the volume, with topics ranging from refreezing glaciers to lesbian lizards. There was no central theme, so the writers were allowed to contribute to any topic that interested them.
