“If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.” (Gospel of Thomas, 70)I think about the above lines all the time.

I gave up on New Year’s resolutions a long time ago, if only because I didn’t need to add anything more to my to-do list—and I also felt like admonishing myself to “eat healthier,” or “work out more,” or “drink less” didn’t work. Invariably, I failed almost immediately, which isn’t a great way to start anything. (After all, what does “eat healthier” even mean?”)There are two points to make.

Following the election and my response piece, several people sent me an essay called “10 ways to be prepared and grounded now that Trump has won” by Daniel Hunter. It’s an excellent piece that I’ve returned to many times since. I was immediately struck by his understanding of the psychological ground on which all resistance work rests.

Continue the conversation: please share anything that arose for you during our winter retreat or ask questions in the comments below. Thank you for being a part of my community. Really. In our first gathering since the election, we met on Sunday morning (Portland time) to explore the Sacred and what it means to have time for ourselves, for imagination and creativity, for nature, and for true connection with others. How does synchronicity appear when we hone our awareness in this way?

I feel immensely grateful for the community forming through this newsletter. When we gather, I am reminded that we could, as a society, meet in a very different way than what is modeled by the dominant culture. In a way that is so much more rewarding and nourishing. Yesterday’s workshop was no exception. A short history of “imaginal” work and its connection to active imagination. An argument for how engagement with the unconscious is connected to social justice work.

There is no way to capture how awful the last week has been for democracy, humanity, and very basic human decency. I’m worried about literally millions of immigrants, millions of federal employees, women in the military,Anthony Fauci, and, gosh, all of us. I hope you’re okay.
