A new grant-funded initiative to Nebraska media students in rural communities across the state was a resounding success in its maiden voyage this year, according to students and coordinators alike. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln program, branded as the rural journalism internship program by facilitators, aims to place UNL students in rural communities across the state to push back against the flow of post-graduation outmigration that the state has long grappled with.

The Subdistrict 5 race for the Lower Elkhorn Natural Resources District Board of Directors is a contest between two Wayne residents with widely different backgrounds. The City of Norfolk was paid a visit on Wednesday by a dignitary from the other side of the globe. Chipiliro “Chipi” Mpinganjira, a member of the Malawi National Assembly and Blantyre City Council, has been touring across the city since he arrived on Sunday. From Johnson Park to Wis-Pak to Divots Brewery, Mpinganjira said he’s not only been impressed, but inspired by everything he’s seen so far.

Norfolk’s race for the Lower Elkhorn Natural Resources District Board of Directors seat in Subdistrict 3 will feature two business owners in the region. Anthony Wisnieski — co-owner of Building Green Structures in Pilger — aims to hold his seat against challenger Layne Roth, the self-employed owner of Happy Pet Home Care who has been an outspoken critic of many of the board’s members at their bimonthly meetings.
