Several active wildfires in Los Angeles have led to at times “unhealthy” air quality on campus, Chief Campus Health Officer Dr. Sarah Van Orman said in a briefing with the Daily Trojan Friday afternoon. Some on-campus events have been moved indoors as a preventive measure, according to a University-wide email from the Office of the President on Thursday.

Student Health is organizing opportunities to learn health skills — including naloxone intervention and hands-only CPR training — for Nov. 21’s Conquest spirit rally and concert, Chief Campus Health Officer Dr. Sarah Van Orman said in a briefing with the Daily Trojan and Annenberg Media. The training is intended to expand students’ opportunities to learn life-saving skills.

In recognition of National Pharmacy Week, students, health professionals and elected officials attended the 2024 Annual Legislative Day Event, a conference intended to advocate for the pharmacy profession, Friday afternoon at the Stauffer Pharmaceutical Sciences Center at the Health Sciences Campus. Mark Hanin, who organized the event, said the conference was hosted to encourage students to become involved in advocacy.

Student Health reports higher cases of respiratory infections this season, including a few cases of pertussis — also known as whooping cough. Cases have increased on campus and throughout the county, Chief Campus Health Officer Dr. Sarah Van Orman said in a briefing with the Daily Trojan Tuesday morning. While initial symptoms may be similar to those of the flu and common cold, pertussis often presents with a persistent, severe cough.
