Earlier this month, California governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill that outlaws preferences for legacy students — applicants who are the children of alumni — at private colleges and universities. This bill is designed to target schools with strong legacy preferences such as Stanford and the University of Southern California. Excluding CalTech, these two schools are the most competitive private universities in California.

Editor's Note: We are honored to publish Dr. Scott Atlas' remarks from today's Stanford Health Policy Conference, “Pandemic Policy: Planning the Future, Assessing the Past."To speak about censorship, we first must acknowledge the factual context. Lockdowns were instituted, they failed to stop the dying, they failed to stop the spread - that’s the data: Bjornskov, 2021; Bendavid, 2021; Agarwal, 2021; Herby, 2022; Kerpen, 2023; Ioannidis, 2024.

Four years ago this week Vice President Mike Pence announced the White House’s “15 days to slow the spread” campaign. What followed was the unprecedented use of lockdowns, school closings and other sweeping measures to mitigate Covid-19. Four years later, we know what many of us suspected then: None of those policies were successful, and many were gravely damaging. The Covid health benefits of mandatory lockdowns were tiny. Lockdowns in the U.S. prevented between 4,000 and 16,000 Covid deaths.

The public health emergency of the COVID-19 pandemic ended long ago, but America faces a new emergency. Faith in health agencies has plummeted more rapidly since 2019 than any other government institution, with almost two-thirds now rating the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as “only fair or poor.” Half of America no longer has much confidence in science itself.

The public health emergency of the SARS2-CoV pandemic ended long ago, but America faces a new emergency. Faith in health agencies has plummeted more rapidly since 2019 than any other government institution, with almost two-thirds now rating the FDA and the CDC as only fair or poor. Half of America no longer has much confidence in science itself.
The loss of trust is part of the disgraceful legacy of those who held power during the pandemic.
