At my professor’s home in Goleta, we chose sections for a bilingual reading of Juan Rulfo’s short but impactful death-themed novel “Pedro Páramo” for an upcoming Día de los Muertos celebration. Don Luis Leal, winner of the National Humanities Medal and a true pioneer in Mexican, Chicano and Latin American literature, was an inspiration during my graduate school years at UC Santa Barbara.
