INTRODUCTION Short bowel syndrome (SBS) occurs after critical loss of intestinal surface area, leading to intestinal failure (IF), characterized by inadequate bowel length and/or function to absorb the nutrients necessary to meet metabolic needs (Table 1). The most common etiology of SBS in children is necrotizing enterocolitis. Others include malrotation with midgut volvulus, intestinal atresias, and gastroschisis.
