    Health and Medicine Tuesday, January 14th, 2025Dr. David J. Weber, UNC Medical Center’s medical director for infection prevention, expects an average flu and cold season. He saw a typical post-holiday surge from late December into early January locally and nationally in cases of flu, COVID-19 and RSV, or respiratory syncytial virus. Positive flu tests for UNC Hospitals have steadily increased since early December. Flu usually peaks in North Carolina mid-to-late February, Weber said.

    A professor’s two words of encouragement helped December graduate Krystal Lacayo decide on an academic major that may lead to a career solving entwined issues of environment and society. Lacayo was taking an elective course under Greg Gangi, a teaching professor in Carolina’s environmental, ecology and energy program in the College of Arts and Sciences. The class had kindled a passion in Lacayo for understanding and solving environmental challenges.

    Around Campus Monday, December 2nd, 2024Described by colleagues as a brilliant scientist — and having lived a life enhanced by love and curiosity — Dr. Shelton “Shelley” Earp III wants to inspire Carolina graduates at the 2024 Winter Commencement. The graduation ceremony, open to the public, will begin at 2 p.m. Dec. 15 at the Dean E. Smith Center. Earp, Distinguished Professor of Cancer Research, Medicine and Pharmacology, put Carolina at the forefront of cancer treatment and prevention.

    You might say it began with teaching a robot to cook. In a presentation to faculty members from many University departments, Carolina computer scientist Ron Alterovitz said that his research group taught a robot to perform cooking actions like scooping and transporting ingredients. Alex Tropsha, the K.H. Lee Distinguished Professor in UNC’s Eshelman School of Pharmacy, told Alterovitz that chemistry researchers perform many lab tasks that resemble a sophisticated form of cooking.
