    Hours after the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in New Orleans on Feb. 9 to win the 2025 Super Bowl, two Carolina students were roaming the field. Soaking in the moment at Caesars Superdome, Anna Laible and Maya Waid took a few pictures on the field together, then Laible scooped up a handful of confetti to bring home — a small memento from a life-changing week in New Orleans.

    Health and Medicine Tuesday, January 14th, 2025Dr. David J. Weber, UNC Medical Center’s medical director for infection prevention, expects an average flu and cold season. He saw a typical post-holiday surge from late December into early January locally and nationally in cases of flu, COVID-19 and RSV, or respiratory syncytial virus. Positive flu tests for UNC Hospitals have steadily increased since early December. Flu usually peaks in North Carolina mid-to-late February, Weber said.

    The night after Hurricane Helene devastated western North Carolina, Matthew Mauzy was in a helicopter flying over the mountains. Even wearing night vision goggles, Mauzy strained to see in the dark. The sloped terrain below him made it harder to see the ground. But Mauzy is no stranger to crises. As the emergency response technology manager for UNC Information Technology Services, Mauzy is responsible for the IT behind the Alert Carolina system.
