    In a country divided on policy and practice, American voters do agree on one thing: they don't trust the country's political leaders. When it comes to important national issues, three-quarters (75%) of voters trust the American people over politicians. Just 9% trust political leaders more. Two thirds (66%) believe that the federal government has become a special interest group that looks out primarily for its own interests. Only 17% disagree with that sentiment.

    Democrats who don't understand how Trump got elected have their answer: love him or hate him, people trusted him on the economy more than Democratic candidates. Most voters (57%) still name either inflation or other economic concerns as the most important voting issue. Last election cycle (and historically) voters trusted Republicans more on this topic. That is no longer true. On inflation, 42% now trust Democrats more than Republicans, while 38% take the opposite view.

    The more people earn, the more they believe they pay too much in taxes. Voters who earn more than $150,000 a year lead the way, with 49% believing they pay more than their fair share of taxes. Of those who earn less than $35,000 a year, just 19% believe they pay more than their fair share. There is also an educational divide. Most voters (53%) with postgraduate degrees believe they pay more than their fair share in taxes.
