[This post was written before I heard the sad news that Brian Wilson passed away. Only the title was changed.]In this post, I’m going to make a few comments about the pop music revolution that took place over a 14-month period in 1965-66. It’s a sort of follow-up to an earlier post I did on Renaissance painting. I can already anticipate some of the objections; so let me address them before getting into the meat of the post.

Everyone knows what a river is, but do you know about the concept of an atmospheric river? The majority of water vapor outside of the tropics is transported via atmospheric rivers, which are comparatively long, narrow areas in the atmosphere that resemble rivers in the sky.

I believe that the Great Recession was caused by a tight money policy during 2008. Probably fewer than 1% of economists agree with me. Most blame the housing slump and the subsequent banking crisis. I recently gave a talk to a group of people at the Less Online conference in Berkeley.

Now that summer has officially arrived, the idea of sunny days and grilling hot dogs is undoubtedly on some people’s minds. However, today’s Weather Fact Wednesday is more about a winter phenomenon known as “sundogs” than it is about summer. Check out my video for more. @ScottSumnerWx #ScottSumnerWx…A sun dog (or sundog), mock sun, or phantom sun, meteorological name parhelion (plural parhelia), is an atmospheric phenomenon that consists of a bright spot to the left and/or right of the Sun.

When I look at the fiscal situation around the world, it increasingly seems like what you’d expect in a world at war. Yet while there are wars going on in Ukraine, Gaza, Yemen, Sudan, Burma, Libya, and many other places, most developed economies are now at peace. I see three factors that are making global debt markets increasingly resemble wartime conditions:The end of mutual defense pacts. The end of globalization. The end of American fiscal responsibility.

by: Scott Sumner Posted: May 21, 2025 / 02:00 PM EDT Updated: May 20, 2025 / 12:02 PM EDT You have probably heard the phrases “cold front” and “warm front” from your local meteorologist if you have ever watched a weather forecast. You might not, however, be familiar with two more weather factors that impact regions across the nation, or even be seen on a weather map.

Everyone is aware of how vital it is to know the weather for the day, particularly on days with severe weather, especially tornadoes which are awe-inspiring. Additionally, some may have seen funnel clouds and heard about waterspouts ( as seen here ), all of which may and do happen in the hot, muggy summer months. These named meteorological phenomena, particularly tornadoes, occur during severe storms and can have winds of 200 miles per hour or higher in the strongest of them.

by: Scott Sumner Posted: May 7, 2025 / 02:12 PM EDT Updated: May 7, 2025 / 02:12 PM EDT Since “Mother Nature” does what she wants, when she wants to do it, the term “normal” in weather can occasionally be deceptive. I mention this because in meteorology, an inversion is a phenomena in which a layer of warmer air lies on top of cooler air.
