It was American history in the making, and 59 years ago a young man out of Detroit’s Visitation High School was eager to be a part of it. That was the case during the spring of 1966 when 17-year-old Godfrey Dillard accepted a basketball scholarship from Vanderbilt University.

    When Ray Scott coached the Detroit Pistons during the 1970s, he prided himself on being a student of the game. Scott, one of the early Black coaches in the NBA, says his detailed study included extensive note taking — enough notes to fill up an 87-page book. But as Scott roamed the sidelines during home games at Cobo Arena, the Philadelphia native also studied the people that were in the stands, and there was one man Scott took note of very quickly.
