Patrick Harvie has announced he will be standing down as co-leader of the Scottish Green Party. A leadership election is scheduled to take place for the co-leadership of the party this summer and Harvie has confirmed that he won’t be a candidate. Harvie has had a decades-long position at the forefront of the Scottish Greens.

Scottish Labour is utterly wrong to be doubling down in its support for costly and immoral nuclear weapons that tie us even closer to the extremist Trump administration, the Scottish Greens Co-leader Patrick Harvie has said. Harvie’s comments followed Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar’s support for Trident at last week’s First Minister’s Questions in Holyrood. Harvie said: “Nuclear weapons have always been a moral abomination. It is utterly wrong for Labour to be doubling down in their support.

Green MSP Mark Ruskell is urging the Scottish Government to back his Member’s Bill to end greyhound racing for good. Ruskell, who is a long term campaigner on the issue, has proposed the Prohibition of Greyhound Racing (Scotland) Bill which introduces an offence of permitting a greyhound to compete at racetracks. He says this is to ensure that the welfare of these animals is protected and they receive the same care and consideration as other dog breeds.

The COP29 climate conference must see real climate action and succeed where previous summits have failed, Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie has said. Speaking ahead of the forthcoming annual COP conference held this year in Baku, Azerbaijan, Harvie has called for all governments to recognise the urgent scale of the crisis and to strain every sinew to save future generations from complete climate catastrophe.

The return of peak rail fares in Scotland will be a costly blow for commuters and our climate, the Scottish Greens have claimed. Green MSP Mark Ruskell made this claim on the morning that peak rail fares returned to Scotland. This followed a 12 month pilot to remove them that the Scottish Greens delivered when they were in government with the SNP. Reintroducing peak fares means that someone travelling between Glasgow and Edinburgh at peak times will see a return fare increase from £16.20 to £31.40.
