With the right gear and nous, cooking a proper pizza shouldn’t be too tricky. A good dough is kneaded, knocked back, rolled out, topped modestly with tomato sauce, cheese and herbs, then popped into an oven hotter than the sun. When the base begins to char and cheese becomes stringy, it’s time to eat - simple, right? Well, evidently not, because freshly cooked iterations of the Naples staple are notoriously elusive over here, especially at reasonable prices, and even more so served outside.

A pensioner has denied attempting to murder a man in a residential cul-de-sac. The details emerged on Wednesday at Canterbury Crown Court, where it was described how a “particularly distressed” officer believed he thought the baby was dead.

Two men accused of murdering another by stabbing him through the heart in a Kent high street have gone on trial. Mohammed Hgar and Kemal Ibrahim are alleged to have killed Samare Gerezgihir in a late-night attack in Canterbury on October 10 last year. Mr Gerezgihir, 23, suffered “massive blood loss” and was pronounced dead at the scene in a courtyard by the Royal East Kent Yeomanry Memorial, next to the former Nasons department store.
