An ageing leisure centre’s pool building is to be demolished earlier than planned for public safety, council bosses say. The facility at Tides Leisure Centre in Deal was closed and drained of water on March 16 as the first step in the major overhaul planned for the site. But it has since been the target of break-ins and it is feared it could be a magnet for anti-social behaviour. It was meant to be knocked down next winter but officers have now recommended it happens this summer.

Disappointed parents believe their children with special needs are being “failed” as funding for a “lifeline” service is slashed. Kent County Council (KCC) withdrew part of its budget for the National Autistic Society’s (NAS) Kent day centre, known as SAND, last month. The day centre, in Princes Street, Gravesend, offers individual care and support with structured timetables and activities for adults who are diagnosed with autism.

Additional reporting by Finn MacdiarmidBusiness owners claim their trade more than halved after a sinkhole appeared nearby and fear it will happen again. The void appeared in Milton Road, Gravesend, last Tuesday (May 6), causing the carriageway to be cordoned off between Cumberland Avenue and Ordnance Road. Southern Water teams attended and repaired the pipe, using tankers to keep customers in supply while the work was completed.

I won’t pander to stereotypical views of some of the county’s towns, but I would hazard a guess Canterbury isn’t the first on your list of prime suspects. Canterbury? That big, bustling, culture-rich medieval-meets-modern city?
