    Jack Etzel, the affable and enthusiastic reporter who for more than two decades appeared in popular segments on WPXI, died Tuesday, June 24. He was 91. Through his features-style “Etzel at Large” segments, Etzel shone a spotlight on personalities and locations in the Pittsburgh region. Predating the rise in roving-reporter style segments in the ’90s, Etzel would report on the people and institutions that Pittsburghers knew well — and others that deserved a wider spotlight.

    The second film about the sarcastic robot trades outlandish horror for ho-hum action. The closest analogue to M3GAN, the android antagonist of the eponymous 2022 film, might be Freddy Krueger. Admittedly, they don’t share much physical resemblance. But, like Krueger, M3GAN is a character who far eclipsed the story she appeared in.

    The name could refer to longevity. Dependable Drive In has been showing movies in the open air for 75 years, lasting from the era of Humphrey Bogart and Marilyn Monroe to the age of Marvel and “Mission: Impossible.” (And, from then until now, lots of Disney flicks.)Perhaps it’s called Dependable because it’s (almost) always open.

    Last week, I received an email announcing the 2025 inductees into the Mascot Hall of Fame. Two revelations followed. The first: Apparently, the Mascot Hall of Fame exists. Digitally, anyway. It was once a physical place, found in Whiting, Indiana. The brick-and-mortar location only hung around for about six years before closing last summer; before and since, however, founder David Raymond has announced new inductees.

    The locally born singer, best known for the hit “Lightnin’ Strikes,” died Wednesday after a brief illness. Lou Christie, the locally born singer who in 1966 topped the pop charts with “Lightnin’ Strikes,” died Wednesday. He was 82. Born Lugee Alfredo Giovanni Sacco in Crescent, Christie began singing while still a student at Moon Area High School. Inspired by fellow Pittsburgh vocal groups such as The Skyliners, he began releasing solo albums in the early 1960s.
