The East Aurora Planning Commission has voted against recommending the village board to approve a Special Use Permit (SUP) for a bed and breakfast at 59 Walnut Street. The application had previously been tabled at the January meeting as the commission sought advice from Village Attorney Chris Trapp. Two members of the commission abstained from the vote.

Leah Nolan Torres joined the Jamison Road Volunteer Fire Company in February 2015 at the age of 16 as a junior firefighter. As she nears her 10-year anniversary with the company, she has been elected to serve as the 3rd Assistant Chief. She will be the first female to take on this high of a leadership role in the company’s 84-year history. Torres said that firefighting was something she had grown up always wanting to do.

At last Wednesday’s work session Elma Town Engineer James Wyzykiewicz asked council members to consider establishing a maintenance plan for a recently formed drainage district on Seneca Street. Council Member Daryl Nolan was absent from this meeting. The drainage district runs between 5970 and 6050 Seneca Street, all properties owned by Russell Tucker of Creative Land Development. At the East Aurora Union Free School District’s October school board meeting, the board unanimously voted to accept the 2023-2024 Financial Statement Audit Corrective Action Plan. In a letter to district management and the school board dated Sept. 25, the auditors Drescher & Malecki LLP stated that during the audit process they did not identify any deficiencies in internal control over financial reporting that were considered to be material weaknesses.

Nearly 110 teachers from East Aurora invested 1,300 total hours developing and revamping their class materials over the summer to prepare for the current school year. At last Wednesday’s East Aurora School Board meeting, the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Jessica Lyons, gave a report on the summer curriculum and district professional activities. The board would go on to approve the district’s 2024-2025 Professional Learning Plan unanimously later in the meeting.

The Town of Elma is one step closer to having a more visible veteran’s park at the town hall on Bowen Road.At last Wednesday’s meeting, the board approved $45,000 to go to the E.M.W Rademacher V.F.W. Post 5861 to help construct a monument. The money will be paid through federal funds received from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). All ARPA funding must be designated by the end of this year. The town received a decommissioned tank in the summer of 2021.

Phase I of the East Aurora Union Free School District’s 2022 Capital Improvement Project was approximately $400,000 under budget, despite having an unexpected drainage issue at the middle school that needed to be fixed. Phase II may not have the same celebratory conclusion. Based on current estimates it is looking as though the second phase of the project will come in over budget by over $3 million.
