I recently made my way through Maurice Isserman’s “Reds: The Tragedy of American Communism.” The book provides a nuanced history of the Communist Party of the United States of America. Isserman chronicles the group’s successes, while highlighting its deep capacity for self-deception about the nature of the Soviet Union. Among other things, the text inspired me to revisit “Casablanca,” the 1942 classic directed by Michael Curtiz.

The nasal spray used to combat opioid overdoses will soon be available at three locations in the Town of Aurora. Town Board members approved a proposal from Councilman Joseph McCann to establish the sites the night of Monday, Feb. 24. Narcan, a nasal spray that often reverses the effects of an opioid overdose, will be placed in boxes outside the Aurora Town Public Library and the shed near the library on Main Street and the Aurora Municipal Center on Oakwood Avenue.

On Feb. 12, East Aurora/Holland swam at the Section VI Boys Swimming Meet, hosted by Clarence. Mason Szymanski took second in the 200-freestyle to lead the Bombers. Szymanski finished second in the 200-freestyle (1:50.29, personal best). Emmitt Merrick finished fourth in the 100-backstroke (56.45 seconds, personal best) and Jeffrey Szymanski finished 22nd in the 100-backstroke (1:03.31). Will Thompson finished fifth in diving (330.45 points).

The East Aurora Planning Commission has voted against recommending the village board to approve a Special Use Permit (SUP) for a bed and breakfast at 59 Walnut Street. The application had previously been tabled at the January meeting as the commission sought advice from Village Attorney Chris Trapp. Two members of the commission abstained from the vote.

O’Connell Electric is in the final phase of trimming trees in the village before GoNetSpeed installs fiber optic cables, and the tree work is beginning in the Town of Aurora. Supervisor Chuck Snyder said that the work is expected to be complete by the beginning of April. Most of the tree work will be taking place on the north side of town.

Maxwell Yount (124 lbs.) and Cam Krieger (138 lbs.) finished in sixth place to lead the East Aurora/Holland wrestlers at the ECIC Tournament, hosted by Lancaster at the Lancaster High School Field House. Clarence won the team title after the Red Devils scored 167.5 points. Frontier finished second, after the Falcons tallied 158.5 points. Pioneer finished third after the Panthers with 154 points. East Aurora/Holland finished 19th in the 23-team field. The Blue Devils added up 45.5 points.

On Jan. 25, East Aurora/Holland swam in the ECIC “A” Meet hosted by Alden. The Bombers won the team title. East Aurora/Holland won the team title in the five-team ECIC IV field after the Bombers scored 415 points. The host Bulldogs finished second, tallying 338 points. Tonawanda finished third after the Timberwolves added up 331 points. Springville-Griffith Institute and Iroquois rounded out the field.

The Town of Wales appointed a new Building Inspector and Code Enforcement Officer at the Jan. 14 reorganizational meeting. Daniel Whitehead, who has lived in Wales for the last 30 years, will be assuming both duties. He is replacing Walter Raichel who recently retired. Whitehead retired from the Cheektowaga Police Department 17 years ago.

Two stories I had been meaning to cover came together nicely last week at the West Falls Center for the Arts (WFCFA) on Route 240. As part of their ongoing Musical Memories Café, Carolyn and Bill Panzica, founders of the center, hosted lunch for those with memory issues and their caregivers. They served pizza, salad and drinks as they have every first and third Wednesday for several years. Along with the relaxing lunch, they provided music.
