I recently made my way through Maurice Isserman’s “Reds: The Tragedy of American Communism.” The book provides a nuanced history of the Communist Party of the United States of America. Isserman chronicles the group’s successes, while highlighting its deep capacity for self-deception about the nature of the Soviet Union. Among other things, the text inspired me to revisit “Casablanca,” the 1942 classic directed by Michael Curtiz.

The nasal spray used to combat opioid overdoses will soon be available at three locations in the Town of Aurora. Town Board members approved a proposal from Councilman Joseph McCann to establish the sites the night of Monday, Feb. 24. Narcan, a nasal spray that often reverses the effects of an opioid overdose, will be placed in boxes outside the Aurora Town Public Library and the shed near the library on Main Street and the Aurora Municipal Center on Oakwood Avenue.

On Feb. 12, East Aurora/Holland swam at the Section VI Boys Swimming Meet, hosted by Clarence. Mason Szymanski took second in the 200-freestyle to lead the Bombers. Szymanski finished second in the 200-freestyle (1:50.29, personal best). Emmitt Merrick finished fourth in the 100-backstroke (56.45 seconds, personal best) and Jeffrey Szymanski finished 22nd in the 100-backstroke (1:03.31). Will Thompson finished fifth in diving (330.45 points).

The East Aurora Planning Commission has voted against recommending the village board to approve a Special Use Permit (SUP) for a bed and breakfast at 59 Walnut Street. The application had previously been tabled at the January meeting as the commission sought advice from Village Attorney Chris Trapp. Two members of the commission abstained from the vote.
