*Well, now what? Now that Rafael Devers, for the second time in the last three months, has told the Red Sox “Thanks, but no thanks,” to a request for a position change, where do the parties go from here? Friday’s sitdown between John Henry and Devers, with Alex Cora acting as go-between and occasional translator, seems to have brought the temperature down at least somewhat.

WITH a shutout victory Thursday afternoon, enabling them to win their series with the Texas Rangers and get back over the .500 mark, the Red Sox probably thought they were headed for a proverbial “happy flight” to Kansas City. Think again. Instead, after nearly a week of studiously avoiding the media, Rafael Devers relented and was asked his thoughts about moving to first place to fill the void left by the injured Triston Casas. BOSTON — He’s not the captain, officially or otherwise. He can’t claim much in the way of tenure, either, having been in a Red Sox uniform a little over a month. Still, spend some time around the Red Sox and it’s impossible to miss the impact Alex Bregman has had on his new team. He leads them in most offensive categories, but that’s only part of his contributions. His presence in the clubhouse and the dugout is outsized.
